Now Dental Care is More Affordable in Canada – Government of Canada Announced

The announcement, made on Monday, highlighted the alarming statistic that one-third of Canadians lack dental insurance and in 2022, one in four Canadians avoided visiting oral health professionals due to financial constraints.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan seeks to rectify this by ensuring that access to oral health care is not contingent on one’s ability to pay.

Phased Rollout the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) for Increased Accessibility

The CDCP will be implemented gradually over the coming months. The first beneficiaries are seniors. Uninsured seniors aged 87 and above can start applying for dental care this month.

The plan will then expand to seniors aged 77 to 86 in January of next year, followed by those aged 72 to 76 in February 2024 and those aged 70 to 71 in March 2024.

Eligible individuals will receive personalized invitations and instructions on how to apply by telephone. In May, applications will transition to an online portal, opening for seniors aged 65 and older.

Subsequently, in June, individuals holding a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate and children under 18 can apply online. Finally, all remaining eligible Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 can apply online starting in 2025.

Dental Care Plan Government of Canada – Comprehensive Coverage and Administration

The CDCP is designed to cover a broad spectrum of oral health care services, including preventive measures such as scaling (cleaning), polishing, exams, x-rays, fillings, removable dentures, and root canal treatments.

Seniors enrolled in the CDCP can commence oral health visits as early as May 2024. For other age groups, start dates will be determined based on when each group can apply. 

The administration of the CDCP will be a collaborative effort, with Health Canada partnering with Employment and Social Development Canada through Service Canada and Sun Life.
